A Café with Charles

We at Pollensa Lifestyle are thrilled to unwrap a brand new series named The Café Interviews. This engaging initiative is all about bringing you face-to-face with the individuals who make Pollensa pulse with life.

On this beautiful sun-kissed Sunday, we find ourselves at a radio station in Pollensa, the city by the bay, the city that rocks, the city that never stops, or so it appears, as we have the pleasure of sharing a cup of coffee with Charles Nutter, one of the presenters at English Radio Pollensa. What a rockin’ way to kick off this inaugural edition.

Nestled away in the studio, oblivious to the local market buzz just around the corner, we dive headfirst into the fascinating world of Charles, his journey with local radio, and his delightful breakfast show, “Easy like Sunday Morning”, that has become a weekend staple for many local residents.

English Radio Pollensa, which Charles kind of co-founded, has been a beacon of English language broadcasting in North Mallorca for the past 15 years. What began as a humble initiative has now morphed into a beloved station with a steadily growing fan base. But we quickly learn that what truly sets this radio station apart isn’t its success but the spirit that fuels it. It soon becomes apparent that this is much more than just music for Charles.

Along with his fellow presenters, he generously volunteers his time to keep the station humming while transforming it into a platform for philanthropy. Rallying to raise funds for numerous noble causes throughout the year, English Radio Pollensa has become a local champion for The Allen Graham Charity 4 Kids, which helps disadvantaged children and young adults in Mallorca, around 650 of which are currently in care, and PRODIS, a non-profit association in Pollensa dedicated to supporting people with disabilities.

Peeling back the layers of Charles’s love affair with radio, we discover it’s not a recent romance. The seeds were sown during his youth when he was a devoted listener of iconic stations like Radio Caroline and Atlantic 252. And his love for music doesn’t stop at the playlists of his radio show. Over the years, he has attended hundreds of concerts, is an avid fan of 70s rock, and is partial to some country music.

Charles’ time at the radio has been far from short on memorable experiences. He once interviewed Chris Tarrant, the host of the popular TV show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire”. Imagine having your chance to sit in the hot spot!

But the radio isn’t his only passion. When he’s not behind the mic, you might find him twirling across the dance floor in a ballroom dancing class or bringing characters to life in an amateur theatre production (keep an eye out for him this March in “Hooked into Neverland” at Alcúdia Auditorium).

When we ask if he has any dark secrets to reveal, he replies, “I have to say I am a complete adrenaline junkie! I love car rallies, especially when they close the road for us. Imagine driving to Formentor lighthouse, round all those hairpins, full throttle! You have to put all of your trust in the hands of your navigator!”

As our coffee cups begin to look disappointingly empty, Charles leaves us with a parting gift – his top three favourite tracks: Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison, Me and Bobby McGee by Janis Joplin, and Three Little Birds by Bob Marley – a beautiful reminder from him to us all, “not to worry, ’cause every little thing is gonna be alright.”

Our journey with The Café Interviews has just begun. We look forward to bringing you more fascinating stories and celebrating the remarkable individuals who make our community unique.
